Busan’s ‘foreigner-friendly’ momentum on display as Nepalese community holds AGM at Dong-Eui University

" Nepalese Community In Busan (NCB) marks a new chapter with major membership expansion and a campus-hosted gathering reflecting Busan’s growing multicultural reality. "

BUSAN  Dec. 31, 2025  As Busan’s international student population continues to diversify, a campus in the city became the stage for a community-led model of integration on Wednesday, when the Nepalese Community in Busan (NCB) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025 at Dong-Eui University.

The gathering, organized by one of Busan’s largest Nepalese community groups, was positioned as more than an internal year-end meeting. By hosting the AGM at a university where Nepalese students are increasingly visible, NCB framed the event as a bridge between international students and the wider local community — a message aligned with Busan’s broader push to be recognized as a more foreigner-friendly city.

NCB said the venue choice carried meaning. Dong-Eui University has become a familiar hub for Nepalese students in the region, and the AGM was designed to strengthen communication and cooperation at the campus level while expanding community networks beyond students to include workers and families living in Busan.

A total of 45 participants attended, including 15 members of the NCB executive committee and 30 associate members, underscoring the organization’s growing scale and capacity. NCB described the event as a milestone that reflects the community’s rising visibility and organizational consolidation in Busan.

“This AGM is both a reflection on the past year and a starting point for NCB to move into a new phase,” said Ashok Acharya, president of NCB. “We will continue to unify the voices of the Nepalese community in Busan and expand exchanges with local society.”

Denesh Thapa, vice president of NCB, emphasized the organization’s inclusive mission. “NCB is a community for all Nepalese living in Busan  students, workers and families,” he said. “We aim to grow as a platform of solidarity and cooperation that helps people connect and settle more smoothly.”

One of the most notable moments of the AGM was an Associate Member Appointment Ceremony, an initiative NCB said is central to building a stronger participation base. More than 40 new associate members were appointed, and Deepesh Surje Shahi, newly appointed chair of the associate members committee, led the proceedings and shared plans to expand participation and engagement in 2026.

NCB also expressed its appreciation to Dong-Eui University for providing the venue and supporting preparations, describing the collaboration as a practical example of how universities can play an active role in supporting international students’ social connection and community participation issues increasingly tied to student well-being, retention and long-term regional settlement.

Looking ahead, NCB said it plans to continue programs in 2026 focused on community welfare, settlement support, education and cultural exchange, while strengthening partnerships with local institutions and campus communities.
